The technological revolution in the mobile phone industry has been a threatening symbol for rare metals and the environment. A movement has launched to repair your smartphones to save energy, money and the environment. Manufacturers have finally understood the necessity of easing customers to recycle their mobile phones.
With the collaboration of iFixit, Samsung will introduce the ‘Self Repair Programme’ to assist Samsung phone owners to access spare parts, tools, and guides for fixing problems. Customers have previously relied on Samsung's internal services to recycle their mobile phones.
iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens stated that we are collaborating with Samsung to improve their repair guides and tactics. This will be a profound transformation where companies will back the customer’s right to repair for the betterment of the planet. Countries are developing policies to ease third-party repair shops.
Samsung’s press release states that you will get a visually precise guide to fix the problems in your phone. The debate starts with “is it only for premium mobile phones or cheap ones?” Samsung is planning to diversify the range of spare parts and self-repair functionalities. Repairing batteries are difficult due to their glued fixation. So the most probable spare parts will be the back glass, charging ports, and display panels.
Samsung announced its Self-Repair Programme on 31st of March 2022. This summer, the company will compel Samsung users to come and recycle their old phones. Samsung is planning to expand the scope of this programme in the future to repair other devices.
Apple and Samsung have been under severe criticism due to their manufacturing policies to make repairing mobile phones difficult for local businesses, for example, glued batteries and non-removable memory devices. Apple launched its Self Repair Service in November 2021 for Apple users.
Apple’s service is available for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13 but wants to expand it to Mac computers that use the M1 chip. Samsung revealed its programme in March 2022, and it will cover the Galaxy S20,Galaxy S21 series, and Galaxy Tab S7 Plus. In the future, Samsung will amplify its scope.
Samsung’s Self Repair Programme will help its customers to get repair tools, spare parts, and step by step visual repair guides. The complicated designs had been restricting the repairing of mobile phones. Samsung is working on it to make it manageable. Now customers can repair display panels, charge ports, and back glass.
At the inaugural stage, this repair programme deals with Galaxy S20, Galaxy S21 series, and Galaxy Tab S7 Plus but the owner of S22 is out of this repair scheme. The programme has not yet been launched officially, but Samsung will expand its repair arena.
The Association of Samsung and iFixit will introduce the Self Repair programme this summer; they will offer a visual repair guide, tools, and parts to customers. At the initial stage, the user will get display assemblies, back glass and charging units. But the company is committed to expanding repair facilities. This service will help Samsung users to maintain their older mobile phones.
